To JSC supporters, past, present, and future:

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Jacob Sheep Conservancy (JSC), I am happy to report that the JSC is alive and well and open for business! I am honored to once again serve as your JSC President. For the benefit of those who weren’t involved back then, I was JSC President in the early days of the organization. The JSC has always been dedicated to the conservation of our wonderful breed of sheep, and your new Board of Directors is making a commitment to keep the JSC vital and working.

Much has changed since I last served on the Board of this great organization, but it seems clear that our members are now looking for a “return to the basics” that characterized the JSC’s earliest days. Foremost among those “basics” is the re-establishment and maintenance of a viable and current Jacob Sheep registry. Today’s on-line capabilities mean that we can make the registration process easier than ever for you. We encourage you to try out our new registration system at www.jacobsheepconservancy.org and let us know if you have any problems – they will be addressed immediately! We discovered some old paperwork still unfinished, and we will be working to tie up all outstanding registrations as soon as possible. If you feel you were lost in the shuffle, please contact our Registrar, Catherine Snook (Fernryan@aol.com), with the details.

At the same time that we are returning to fundamentals, we are also implementing some new policies and programs, with the goals of keeping our current members engaged and of increasing our “JSC flock” – for example, by reducing dues for first-year members. The regular $30 membership dues will be waived, and for the first year, new members may join for $15. We’re open to other ideas that would make JSC membership more valuable for all.

Finally, one of my personal motivations for renewed involvement in the JSC is to encourage and pave the way for the up-and-coming generation of Jacob breeders, among which I am proud to include my daughter, Janetta. I am counting on ideas from our young Jacob breeders to keep the organization relevant for them, while at the same time instilling in them the principles that have motivated the conservation of the Jacob breed in its original form.
